Rumeysa Ozturk, a doctoral student at Tufts University from Turkey, was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Tuesday night in Somerville, Massachusetts. This incident occurred as she was heading out to break her Ramadan fast, demonstrating the alarming trend of targeting individuals based on their beliefs and affiliations, which has intensified under the Trump administration’s oppressive policies towards immigrants and dissenters.

Despite holding a valid student visa, Ozturk’s arrest appears to stem from her political views, particularly her criticism of Tufts’ response to a student government initiative advocating for divestment from companies linked to Israel amidst the Gaza conflict.
